Matthew Jordan Smith is an award-winning photographer, Nikon Ambassasor, visual storyteller, and global educator whose work lives at the intersection of craft, connection, and legacy.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Matthew has photographed some of the world’s most influential figures, including Oprah Winfrey, Aretha Franklin, Zendaya, Samuel L. Jackson, Angelina Jolie, Michael Jordan and George Lucas, while creating campaigns for global brands such as L’Oréal, Pantene, Revlon, and Microsoft. His work has appeared on hundreds of magazine covers and in major international publications.
Beyond commercial success, Matthew is known for creating images that feel personal, human, and timeless. His photography is rooted in presence, listening deeply to his subjects and creating an environment where people feel seen rather than posed. This approach has made him a trusted collaborator for celebrities, executives, artists, and everyday individuals seeking portraits that reflect who they truly are.
In 2021, Matthew made history as the first photographer invited by the International Olympic Committee to live inside the Olympic Village, documenting the emotional lives of athletes from around the world. His long-form personal projects, including Sepia Dreams, Future American President and Aretha Cool: The Intimate Portraits, explore identity, dignity, and legacy, and have been featured on CNN, The View, and at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Now based in Tokyo, Matthew continues to work globally while mentoring photographers through his education platform and popular podcast, Photography Breakthrough Podcast, helping creatives build meaningful, sustainable careers rooted in purpose rather than pressure.
